Now I know I give away my age when the first thing I recommend are books instead of Instagram pages but I’ve been up front about how old I am so I there’s no use in trying to be hip or anything. But honestly, the best way I’ve learned over the years has been from books. I now also go to various websites, you tube stations, blogs etc., follow people on social media and if I ever get the chance to see an author live I jump at it. But the core of my foundation of learning has been from the simple act of putting nose to paper.
Some of the material is pretty “out there” for more conservative folk but it all rang true for me in one way or another. And of course you can google any of these books and/or their authors to find out more info on them and to see where you can pick up a copy yourself. Old school style.
Here’s a selection of my nearest and dearest mystics, poets, and truth seekers …
BOOKS THAT I TREASURE AND THAT STILL SIT BY MY BEDSIDE:
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
HISTORY (AN ALTERNATIVE TAKE)
Pilgrimage to Iona by Claire Nahmad.
The Secret History of the World by Mark Booth.
Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
Love Poems from God/Twelve Voices from the East and West by Daniel Ladinsky
New and Selected Poems, Volume One by Mary Oliver
The Gift & A Year With Hafiz translated by Daniel Ladinsky. I discovered Hafiz only a few years ago but fell head over heels in love. And Daniel Ladinsky’s translations are just perfect. Hafiz is funny, dirty, profound, and wise. I try to read a poem a night before I fall asleep. My own version of a bedtime story.
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
The Purity of Desire/100 poems of Rumi by Daniel Ladinsky with Nancy Owen Barton
RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY
The Gospel of Mary Magdalene by Jean-Yves Leloup
The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer
Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes Phd. I’m technically half way through this book but I love it so much I’m pacing myself. I want to be reading it when I’m old and grey. Well older and greyer. And I’m not so sure it’s self help but that’s where I’ll put it for now. It is a stunning collection of fairy tales and myths told by an expert cantadora.
